CARRAMASCHI CLINIC

LOCATION BUILT AREA YEAR

I have always been averse to medical environments – hospitals, wards, infirmaries.
The light, odors, colors and sounds are always disturbing in such places – not to mention the symbolism they carry.
I never thought I would design even a simple wound-dressing room.
But I then envisioned a great challenge in designing the clinic for Dr. Carramaschi.
How to imbue the light and clean aesthetics valued by the client as a plastic surgeon in the atmosphere of a medical clinic?
How to conciliate the idea of warmth and coziness to its aseptic routine?
How to accommodate such an extensive program, with so many peculiarities in terms of circulation, into a fluid and efficient layout?
The solution came from the choice of simple and inconspicuous finishing materials – polished cement and acrylic plaster in the reception and waiting rooms; epoxy painting in the examination, doctors’ and treatment rooms – and from the creation of an equally effortless floor plan.
The layout sets out a plan that is practically symmetric in its center-transversal axis, which connects the lifts to the main waiting room.
To one side, we placed the doctors’ and examination rooms of the plastic surgery service; to the other, the rooms for the various cosmetic treatments the clinic provides. An orthogonal circulation axis intersecting the first connects both wings and serves physicians and patients. A secondary service circulation axis leads to the supporting facilities – locker rooms, kitchen, storage rooms, biomedical waste, etc.
